    Texas Heart Institute Perfusion Conference 2023  In support of the mission of The Texas Heart Institute and its commitment to learning, the purpose of The Texas Heart Institute June 2023 Perfusion Conference is to provide the multi-disciplinary team involved in the care of the cardiac patient with the most recent information regarding surgical and perfusion techniques. Experts in the field of cardiac surgery, anesthesia, critical care medicine, and perfusion technology will participate in the conference, discussing current best practices for patient care with focus on the following areas:

    Program Overview

    • Surgical and perfusion techniques for renal and cerebral protection for open and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair
    • Ventricular assist and total artificial heart (TAH) support for the pediatric and adult patient
    • Organ procurement and preservation for cardiac and lung transplantation. Discussion of donation after circulatory death (DCD) and donation after brain death (DBD) organ donation
    • Current circuit options for the adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patient, including Life SPARC, Tandem Heart and multi-oxygenator venovenous (VV) and venoarterial (VA) ECMO
    • Discussion of current trends in perfusion education, certification, and practice guidelines
    • International perfusion education and current trends in practice
    • Autoregulation of cerebral perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass

    Educational Objectives

    At the conclusion of this symposium, participants should be able to –

    • Describe optimal perfusion circuit and perfusion techniques for DCD organ harvesting
    • Describe risks and benefits of normothermic lung perfusion for donor organs
    • Describe various circuits for left heart bypass, cold crystalloid or blood for renal perfusion
    • Describe perfusion circuit variations and cannulation strategies for ECMO support with Tandem Heart and Life SPARC
    • Describe the function of the BiVACOR TAH, and perfusion circuit cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)
    • Describe perfusion strategies to measure cerebral oxygen delivery and identify changes in adequate cerebral perfusion during CPB
